This seed counting sensory activity is a great way to teach your kids basic math while having fun. I got the original idea from here. I used wooden numbers I got from the dollar store that I originally created for my Flower Measuring Activity post. It is a super simple set up which can be used for young toddlers as young as 2 and go up until elementary aged kids if you add addition, subtraction, etc.
What You Need
- container of dried black beans or black/brown pom poms, rice, or whatever you have
- small pots (mine are made of paper so they won’t break)
- numbers (can be puzzle pieces)
- colored pom poms
- kid shovel or spoon
- fake flowers or vegetables
Activity
- Set up bin with empty pots and arrange numbers in front. Put a pile of pom poms off to the side.
- Have your child count how many seeds (pom poms) that matches the corresponding number.
- They can then cover the pom poms with the black beans and have flowers/veggies grow.
- To extend the activity you can use a plus sign, negative sign, etc. and have your child practice more advanced math. I would use any mathematical puzzle pieces, magnets, or whatever you have to create this. If you don’t have anything like that, then use a post it and draw the sign.
