We have been working in our garden since the moment the soil thawed out from the winter and it inspired me to create my own garden planner. This is geared towards kids, but I also have been using it for myself to help plan out the garden. I tend to garden 3 out of the 4 seasons (although my husband just built a hoop house for us so I might be able to grow in the winter!!). Having a planner helps me schedule when to plant certain seeds based on the harvest times. Right now we only have 4 raised beds (we will be building more) so I am limited on space and planning it out keeps me on track so I always have something growing.
This garden planner is a free printable I created with my own garden in mind, but it is pretty universal and can be used for anyone’s raised beds. Check out my video below for more details. If you do not have a garden you can simply print this out and let your kids pretend how they would set up their own garden. It is a great way to teach them about vegetables and gardening without actually having to garden. There are some simple and easy ways to garden with your kids even if you are limited on space and time. Simply planting a few seeds in an indoor or outdoor container can teach them so much. You can also take your child to a local community garden or a farm so they can see first hand what it is all about.
How to Use the Garden Planner Printable
- Print and laminate to use over and over again
- Put velcro stickers on the back of the veggie cards and garden layout so your child can move around each square to create their own plan
- Give your kids a dry erase marker to fill out the planner
- Extend the activity by getting your children involved in the garden maintenance, believe it or not kids really do enjoy helping!
