I recently posted about the Importance of Reading to Young Children along with a few tips and tricks we use to encourage a love of reading.  I wanted a place to organize all of our children’s books and a cozy nook where my daughters would feel comfortable reading.  Most of the time we end up reading to my oldest daughter in her new big girl bed, but sometimes we like to cuddle under her teepee while we read.  I always catch her under there with a stack of books reading to herself.

How can you create your own cozy reading nook?

First things first, you will need a bookshelf, or a built in to house all of the books. Pinterest is a great place for inspiration if you want to build your own or try to recreate a specific look.  We bought a plain white bookcase (similar one can be found here) with added storage where I put square baskets to hold toys and or dress up clothes.  I personally like getting a simple one so all of the books and knick-knacks will stand out on their own.

Next, you will need some large pillows or bean bag chairs to create the cozy feel.  Our reading nook has both a bean bag chair and a teepee with several coordinating pillows for extra comfort.

A rug is a great way to add a pop of color as well as extra padding if you have a hardwood floor.

Then it is time to add in the books and decorative items.  I like to use some wooden toys and family heirlooms to bring the look together.  For example, the yellow rubber ducky was something my husband won at a diaper derby when he was an infant and his mother saved it for us.  It is so important to me to keep things that have sentimental value.  I also have several books my husband and I read as children.  It is always fun to read the same books you loved as a child to your own children!
