Since I just had my fourth baby and this is my fourth time nursing, I decided to create a post of nursing must haves. These are all of the things that have worked for me over the years. Since having my first daughter over 5 years ago, so many things have changed with pumps and other accessories.
Breast Pumps :: I have always used my Medela pump in style breast pump, but it has taken a beating over the years and doesn’t work well anymore. I was given a new Spectra pump with this baby so I added both the Medela and Spectra to my list. So far the Spectra has really great suction and is considered a hospital grade pump it is also really quiet. The downside is it doesn’t come in a carrying case so it will not be great for moms that need to take their pumps on the go. I know there are many new pumps out there that might even be better than these two options, but since these are the only ones I know about I wanted to give you my honest opinion. The Medela was great for all of the years I used it and I am sure the newer models are even better. I would recommend either brand!
Milk Collection :: Since having my third baby, I ordered the Miklies Milk saver and LOVE it. You place it inside your bra on the opposite breast your baby isn’t nursing from so it will collect the milk from the let down that would otherwise end up in your nursing pad. I have been able to save so much milk just from this little product. I also added the Hooka silicone pump, which does something similar except it suctions to your breast allowing it to collect even more milk. I personally haven’t tried this product, but have seen several amazing reviews. Although some people say it can cause an over supply. It all depends on the person and how much milk you need for your freezer storage.
Breast Care :: The first couple of weeks can be hard to establish a correct latch and your nipples can get really raw and painful. I have used Medela Tender Care Hydrogel with every baby for the first few days of nursing and it has helped so much. I also used the plastic shells to protect your nipples and let air get to them. Lanolin is also great to have on hand for the first few weeks. I am also a consultant for Pure Haven and LOVE their mom balm which is also great for dry lips, stretch marks, and cuticles. You can purchase it here.
Bottles :: I have been a LifeFactory consumer for many years now because they use glass bottles and will replace if they end up breaking. They are covered in a silicone sleeve to protect the glass, but depending on how they land if dropped they might break. It happens very rarely, but I have had to replace them before. I really love their bottles because you can change out the nipple top to a sippy cup top or just a regular screw top so you can continue to use the bottles as your child grows. I like to add snacks into them when the baby is eating finger foods. They are also great to hold homemade baby purees.
Hopefully these tips are helpful and I am sure I have forgotten a few things and will continue to update as my baby grows. Please let me know if you have any questions or even suggestions!!
