Since we moved into our house almost 5 years ago, one of our most used spaces is our mudroom. When I designed the area, I tried to think of everything I would need in the space, check out my other posts here and here. I have noticed a few things that haven’t been working for our young family. I originally designed the bottom of the bench to be open for all of the wet boots and shoes, but that just turned into huge piles of shoes and it was hard for me to pick everything up when it came time to vacuum and wash the floor. If something takes too long for me to do, you can pretty much guarantee it won’t get done. Since it is a mudroom, not vacuuming wasn’t an option. I decided to purchase 6 white plastic bins that were sturdy enough for us to put shoes in. I wanted them to be plastic so it was easier to clean the bins. I also wanted to use the container concept, meaning the container creates a boundary and only a certain amount of shoes can fit inside. After decluttering several shoes my kids outgrew and putting away seasonal items, our mudroom feels much more manageable with the 4 plastic bins. I also added two up top to hold extra items we don’t use everyday. It is easier for my kids to understand where to put their shoes and it creates less visual clutter. Check out my full video below for all of the details about the refresh.
